Questions people ask

I'm a support worker and I got a text. What is this?

Somebody you work for is using Shiftaroo to plan their roster, and they've added you. Sign in with the mobile number they texted and you'll see your shifts — including shifts for anyone else you work for, if they use it too. It costs you nothing, and no roster is ever visible from another.

Do I need to download an app?

No — Shiftaroo works in a browser on any phone, tablet or computer. There's also an app for iPhone (App Store) and Android (Google Play), which adds notifications and can put shifts in your phone's calendar. Everything else works the same everywhere.

How do I start a roster?

Sign in, then follow the setup. It asks three things: who the roster is for, which day your week starts on, and who your support workers are. Laying out the first week is easier on a laptop or an iPad — there's more room. After that it's copy-last-week and the odd change, which is fine on a phone.

Can more than one of us run it?

Yes. Invite anyone in the household, or a support coordinator, and choose what each can do — from running the whole roster down to just being able to look at it.

My worker has not signed up yet. Can I still roster them?

Yes. The moment you invite somebody they appear on your week, marked "Not joined yet", and you can put them on shifts that night. When they join, the shifts you already gave them are simply there. You never have to wait on somebody else's phone to finish planning your week.

Will my support workers get bombarded with texts?

No. Shiftaroo never sends the news by text. A worker gets a notification on their phone, and an email as a copy if they have given us one. If notifications are not getting through, they get at most one text a month telling them so, with a link explaining how to turn them on. Sign-in codes are the only texts that always come.

Do you send reminders before a shift starts?

No, and that is deliberate. Every notice Shiftaroo sends is about a change — a week sent, a shift moved, cover needed. Nothing is sent because time passed. A worker who wants a nudge turns on calendar sync in the app, which puts their shifts in their phone's own calendar with an alarm an hour before, and keeps them in step when a shift moves.

What if my workers will not use an app?

They do not have to. Shiftaroo works in any phone browser — no install, no password, just their mobile number and a code. The app adds notifications and calendar sync, and that is all it adds. And because you can roster somebody before they join, one worker being slow never holds up your week.

How long does it take to set up?

Laying out a first week takes about twenty minutes on a laptop or tablet, less if you start from a photo of the roster you already keep. After that it is copy last week, move the two things that moved, and send — a couple of minutes on a phone. Adding a worker takes under a minute.

We only have two support workers. Is this worth it?

That is who it is built for. Shiftaroo is for households running two to eight workers directly, which is exactly the size the big rostering systems are too heavy for. There are no per-worker charges, so two costs the same as eight.

What if a support worker is away?

They book the time off, and any shift they had comes off them and shows as needing somebody. You can then ask one worker, a few, or everyone — and you choose who gets it, rather than it going to whoever answers first. If nobody can, and your household covers it yourselves, you can record that too.

Does it do payroll or invoices to the NDIA?

No. Shiftaroo plans shifts. It can produce an invoice for a support worker from the hours they worked, as a convenience — but you stay responsible for tax, superannuation, insurance and anything you claim.

Does it track where anyone is?

No, and it never will. There's no GPS, no geofencing, and no location-verified clock-in. That's a permanent decision, not a feature we haven't got to yet.

How do I get my data out?

Export it any time, free — including after you cancel. Cancelling never deletes anything: the roster just goes read-only, because it's the record of the support a person received and it belongs to the household. The one thing that does delete it is a full year of nobody signing in at all — and we email two warnings first, with time to export everything.

What does it cost?

A$24.95 a month for the roster, after a 14-day free trial with no card to start. Free for support workers — nothing to see their shifts, nothing to book time off, nothing to invoice. One price, no tiers, no per-worker charges.

Where is our information kept?

In Australia, and treated as health information even where the law wouldn't make us — a roster shows the pattern of somebody's support, and that's nobody else's business. No advertising trackers, nothing is ever sold. Two optional features send only what you hand them overseas to be read and not kept: starting a week from a photo or document, and the live chat. Both say so before you use them, and nothing else from your roster ever goes along.
